3 Things to Look for When Hiring a Manager

Hiring a manager for your company is definitely an important endeavor because managers can either build an organization up or run it down into the ground. Considering that a manager can affect morale, it is important to get the hiring process done right the first time. Thus, here are three important qualities you should consider when you are hiring your next manager.

Honesty

A manager must be honest. A manager who has been caught in several lies will run the risk of his employees completely losing faith in him. This is not leading. TINYpulse says that instead, all human resources experts should look for a manager that is wholly transparent in everything they do. How can you tell if someone is honest? You obviously can’t just ask them, of course, but you can definitely pay attention to their body language during the interview. If they cannot maintain eye contact, it could mean they are lying. Moreover, another more telling feature is to look at what their eyes normally do when they are telling an obvious truth. For example, if their eyes normally dart up when telling a truth, but they dart left in regards to why they left their last job, they possibly are about to tell a falsehood. You really would do well to study body language techniques to avoid hiring an individual who lies.

Attitude

According to The Hire Talent, attitude issues can hurt morale, drain time and energy from other employees, and eventually drive away top performers and valuable clients. The key in determining if a candidate is going to have a good attitude would be to ask them some questions that will gauge such features as perseverance, honesty, humility, initiative and determination. All of these qualities make up someone’s attitude and if they are strong in these areas, they will be a positive manager.

Leadership

You also want to see if a manager can exhibit leadership. One of the ways to do that would be to ask them questions such as, “Tell me about a time you have had to motivate someone to do something. How did you go about doing it?” However, you should go further than that. The Management Center explains that in order to fully determine whether a manager will have leadership, you should have them role-play a scenario during the interview as well.

If you follow these steps, you are sure to find a solid manager for your company. Be aware of any red flags and look at some of the positive signs as well!
