As a business leader, you want to benefit your business and the community. After all, you want your business to thrive and your business gets customers from the larger community. But to benefit the community and the business, you will need to make some changes to how you run your business.
Go Green
Going green may seem like a daunting challenge, but it’s not as complicated as it may sound. You can start off simple by switching your light bulbs to LED bulbs. LED bulbs are more energy efficient and last much longer than regular bulbs, thus reducing energy. You can recycle all paper products from your business and publish training manuals online in e-book forms rather than printing them. You can further go green by using natural light and turning off overhead lights when they’re not in use, buying recycled paper, and turning off all computers and other electronics when they’re not in use. Turning your business green is the result of dozens of small decisions over time.
Have a Greater Purpose
Another way to benefit the community and your business is to have a greater purpose. A majority of consumers prefer the brands they shop at to have a greater purpose beyond producing goods and services. This greater purpose doesn’t have to be superhuman—it can be as simple as trying to keep the earth clean by reducing plastic waste. But a greater purpose shows your customers that your business has other interests and that it’s reach doesn’t extend to just making goods and selling them.
Be Active in the Community
Being a business in a community means that you should be active in that community. Again, it doesn’t have to be huge, but little ways add up. These activities can include hosting a BBQ, cleaning up the city parks, having a float in the 4th of July parade, and being present at local fairs. You should make an effort to get to know your customers in the community where your business resides and be an active part in the community. Your efforts will not be wasted.
Your business can have a far-reaching impact in your community for years to come if you are willing to work at it. By going green, having a greater purpose and being active in the community, you extend your influence in the community and encourage the best from others.
